Montreal Convention and Liability Limits

The Montreal Convention may apply to international air carriage. The carrier liability limit for baggage is generally expressed in Special Drawing Rights. From 28 December 2024 the baggage liability limit is 1,519 SDR per passenger, subject to the applicable legal framework and evidence.

This is not a guaranteed payment, not a fixed tariff, and not automatically paid per bag. It depends on the documents, proven loss, airline investigation and the facts of the journey.

Frequently asked questions

Lost, Delayed and Damaged Baggage FAQs

What should I do if my luggage is delayed?

Keep your baggage tag, PIR or tracking reference, airline messages and receipts for essential purchases. Delayed baggage expense complaints should normally be made in writing within 21 days after the baggage is returned.

Can I claim for damaged luggage?

You can prepare a complaint where the damage is supported by photographs, inspection notes, baggage tags, a PIR or airline report, repair quotes and proof of value. The result depends on the evidence and airline investigation.

What if contents are missing or stolen?

Record when the missing items were discovered, whether the bag showed signs of tampering, and whether a police or airline report exists. Keep proof of value where available.

Can mobility equipment be included?

Yes. The builder includes a specific route for mobility equipment and accessibility impact so practical consequences, replacement arrangements and urgent costs can be explained clearly.

Does the Montreal Convention guarantee compensation?

No. It provides a liability framework and limits for certain air carriage. It is not a fixed tariff or guaranteed outcome.

Can I claim if travel insurance has paid me?

Record any insurance payment, excess or pending claim. This helps avoid double-counting and explains what, if anything, remains outstanding.

Do I need every document before starting?

No. The builder helps identify what is available, missing, requested or not applicable.
