Consumer guidance

Understanding Chargeback

Chargeback is generally a card-scheme process for qualifying debit and credit card transactions. It is not the same as Section 75 and is not an automatic statutory right.

Chargeback

Usually seeks recovery of the disputed card transaction amount through the card-payment chain.

Section 75

A separate statutory route for some qualifying credit-card purchases. Use the Section 75 Builder.

Timing

Claims commonly need prompt action and often refer to around 120 days, but the start point and scheme rules vary.

Merchant defence

A merchant may challenge the claim and provisional credit may be reviewed or reversed.

Issuer complaint

If chargeback is refused or mishandled, request reasons and use the issuer's formal complaint process.

Financial Ombudsman

May consider eligible complaints about issuer handling after the firm's process; outcome and jurisdiction are not guaranteed.

Fraud and bank routes

Unauthorised transactions or wider account issues may fit the Bank Complaint Builder or specialist fraud route.

Safe references

Use last four digits only. Never enter a full card number, CVV, PIN or credentials.

    Boundaries

    Important chargeback boundaries

This general builder does not replace specialist Section 75, APP fraud, Frozen Account, car-finance, investment, pension, mortgage or regulated debt routes.

Seek urgent specialist help for court papers, imminent financial harm or inaccessible essential funds where delay could materially worsen the position.

    Before using your Complaint Pack

This builder organises bank-account facts, evidence and a self-service complaint pack. It does not submit complaints automatically or promise refunds, compensation or Financial Ombudsman acceptance.

Review every factual entry against statements, transaction records and correspondence before sending anything to a bank, provider or Ombudsman.
