Bank scam guidance

What evidence helps an APP fraud refund review?

Bank scam refund cases often turn on the warnings shown, the payment timeline, how the scam developed and how the bank explained its decision.

Quick summary: A clear APP fraud evidence pack helps show what happened before each payment, what the bank knew, and why the refund decision may need review.

Build the payment timeline first

List each payment date, amount, payee name, account details used, payment method and what the scammer told you at that point. The timeline should show the pressure, trust-building and warning signs in sequence.

Keep scammer communications

Messages, emails, adverts, social media profiles, website links, investment dashboards, crypto wallet screenshots and phone logs can help explain why the payment appeared genuine at the time.

Keep bank warnings and bank responses

Where possible, save screenshots or wording of any payment warnings, fraud team messages, branch notes, online banking prompts and final decision letters.

Useful evidence checklist

  • Bank statements showing the disputed payments
  • Scammer messages, calls, emails and account details
  • Bank warning screenshots or notes of what appeared
  • Complaint submission and final bank response
  • Police report, Action Fraud reference or platform reports if available
  • Any evidence of vulnerability, pressure, urgency or impersonation
Quaerens can organise the evidence and, where regulated claims work is needed, suitable matters may be referred to authorised partners.
